What Is an Address Correction Charge?

Address Correction Charge

Address Correction Made Simple

Ask any small parcel shipper about address corrections and they will probably reply with one word: “FRUSTRATING.” Quite simply, not entering the address properly for a shipping label can create frustration for not only the shipper but also the carrier and, most importantly, the customer or recipient.

Shipping to an undeliverable address, making a keystroke error when entering the street number, punching in the wrong ZIP code, or even simply missing a suite number can cost you time and money. A bad address could delay delivery to your customer, creating buyer remorse and a lost sale. If undeliverable, that package may even get shipped back to you at your expense. Even worse, your package could end up in the wrong hands altogether.

Having good parcel management systems that provide you with information about these address corrections is essential. Franklin Parcel’s suite of parcel management reports includes an On-Demand Carrier Address Correction report. Utilizing this report helps you view historical and recent address corrections so that you can update your shipping system to prevent repetitive errors and save money. There are also software companies that can integrate with your systems to provide address verification using the USPS database of verified addresses.

UPS and FedEx now have differing fees for address corrections, which are explained in more detail below.

FedEx Address Correction Review and Fees

FedEx Express Shipments

If the shipper provides an incomplete or incorrect recipient address, FedEx may attempt to find the correct address and complete the delivery. They may use the address included in the shipper’s electronic shipment information to determine whether an address correction is necessary. They will assess a shipping fee. For shipments receiving FedEx Express Multiweight® pricing, the fee is $14.00 per package up to a maximum of $98.00 per shipment. Address correction is also required if the recipient phone number is omitted for a Rural Delivery (RD) address or a Star Route Assignment (SRA) address in Alaska. If they are unable to complete delivery, they are not liable for failing to meet their delivery commitment.

Within the U.S., they also will assess this fee if the address is a P.O. Box number or P.O. Box ZIP code. For international shipments destined to f a P.O. Box address, they may assess the fee if a valid telephone, fax or telex number is not provided for the recipient.

For FedEx International Broker Select, the address correction fee will apply if the broker’s address is incomplete or incorrect on the air waybill or other shipping documentation. If they cannot determine the correct address or cannot reach the broker, they may attempt to contact the sender for address clarification or instructions to return the shipment. If unable to complete delivery under these circumstances, they will not be liable for failing to meet the delivery commitment.

FedEx Ground Shipments

If the shipper provides an incomplete, incorrect, or P.O. Box recipient address, they may attempt to determine the correct address, complete delivery, and notify the shipper of the address correction. They may use the address included in the shipper’s electronic shipment information to determine whether an address correction is necessary. They assess an additional charge for delivery or attempted delivery to the corrected address.

For shipments receiving FedEx Ground Multiweight pricing, the fee is $14.00 per package up to a maximum of $44.40 per shipment. The money-back guarantee does not apply to these shipments, and they are not liable for failing to complete delivery or meet the scheduled delivery time.
